A general cardiologist has completed at least a three-year fellowship in cardiology after medical school and a three-year residency in internal medicine. The general cardiologist deals with all types of heart and vascular problems, including ischemic heart disease (blocked arteries), arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats), congestive heart failure, and lipid (cholesterol) disorders. The general cardiologist typically performs a careful history and physical examination and may order and interpret tests such as a stress test, arteriogram, echocardiogram, and blood tests. A general cardiologist will often prescribe medications, review treatment strategies, and discuss prevention including cardiac risk factor modification. The general cardiologist works closely with other cardiovascular specialists when needed. All of our physicians are qualified in general cardiology. They are especially interested in prevention of heart disease and in slowing the progression of existing heart disease.
